He explores the room, checking various beds and interacting with objects—including a series of student figurines that he handles in an intimate, invasive manner—before finally being able to interact with the door.
Upon opening the door, Janu encounters Valda, a "spiritual consultant" who explains that they are in "The Gateway," a spiritual plane where souls arrive following death. Valda reveals that Janu is a unique case: he is able to leave and return to his physical body at will. Valda identifies as a version of someone Janu knew who died by suicide, and she reveals that Janu is a pivotal figure—the "first version"—whose death marks the end of his world.
A volatile confrontation ensues between Janu and a mysterious entity (the narrator/conductor) who has been influencing his life and inhabiting his body. The entity accuses Janu of lacking a spine and being passive, while Janu expresses a desire to live his own life and be a better man. The entity pressures Janu to acknowledge his power, eventually forcing him to admit that he is the sole conductor of his universe.
